Laos: Beste Tourismus-Destination 2013 (E)

Vientiane, 22.05.2013 – Lao People’s Democratic Republic was recognized as the World’s Best Tourist Destination for 2013 by the European Council on Tourism and Trade (ECTT). Tourist arrivals are surging—up 22% on a per annum basis—with last year’s estimate at 3.3 million. At present, the tourism sector is the second largest income earner in Lao PDR.

The country received the prestigious citation following its initiatives at preserving culture and history and raising the quality of tourism services. Preservation of the country’s historical, cultural and religious patrimony includes the UNESCO Heritage Sites of Luang Prabang and 12th century Wat Phu, as well as the Plain of Jars from Neolithic civilization and Wat Xieng Thong. Care to quality of tourism embraces a new concept of community-based tourism that is nature friendly. This comprises facilities and safety for tourists, access and investments to sites of historical and cultural significance, and the benefits of tourism to grassroots communities.

The ECCT, a non-profit organisation which promotes tourism outside the European Union, specified that the “World Best Tourist Destination is the highest honor to be awarded for a country for achievements in tourism. This award is offered to the countries that are complying with United Nations Tourism Division, UNESCO and European Council on Tourism and Trade (ECTT) principles on fair tourism, ethical tourism and safety standards and historic preservation of cultural sites.”

Zwei Preise für Dokumentarfilm aus Laos

New York/Vientiane, 28.04.2013 – Weitere Ehre für den Gewinner des diesjährigen Tribeca-Filmfestivals: Das Flüchtlingsdrama “The Rocket” (Die Rakete) aus dem südostasiatischen Laos ist auch vom Publikum zum besten Film erklärt worden.

Der Spielfilm wurde in der Nacht zum Sonntag bei einer Verleihzeremonie in New York mit dem Heineken-Zuschauerpreis ausgezeichnet. Als beste Dokumentation würdigte das Publikum den Film “Bridegroom” (Bräutigam) über die soziale Benachteiligung homosexueller Paare. Beide Produktionen erhielten Geldpreise von je 25 000 Dollar (etwa 19 000 Euro).

“The Rocket” war auch der Favorit der Tribeca-Jury. Sie wählte den Film über einen zehnjährigen Jungen und seine Familie im umkämpften Laos zum besten Spielfilm und den jungen Laoten Sittiphon Disamoe zum besten Schauspieler. Quelle: dpa

Mit dem Luxuszug von Bangkok nach Laos

Bangkok/Vientiane, 31.03.2013 – Nur einmal im Jahr fährt der berühmte Orient-Express von Bangkok durch den Nordosten Thailands in Richtung Laos. Das Team des ARD-Studios Singapur hat die Reise des Luxuszuges mit der Kamera begleitet. – Eine TV-Dokumentation, heute Abend auf PHOENIX, 23.15 Uhr.

Es war das erste Mal, dass der Zug über den Mekong hinüber nach Laos rollte. Ein Stück Eisenbahngeschichte für Südostasien, dessen Länder entschlossen sind, durch den Ausbau ihrer Schienennetze näher zusammenzuwachsen. Entstanden ist eine unterhaltsame Reportage über das Abenteuer Zugreise im tropischen Teil Asiens, bei der es nicht immer ohne Überraschungen abgeht. So hat der überlange Luxuszug mit seinen zwei Speisewagen und einem Bar-Waggon mit massiven Verspätungen zu kämpfen, weil die Lokomotiven der Thailändischen Staatsbahn bisweilen zu schwach für den gigantischen Zug sind. Die Gäste nehmen es gelassen, wenn der Zug im Dschungel stehen bleibt. Es ist ja genug Wein und Champagner an Bord.

ARD-Korrespondent Robert Hetkämper und sein Team sind dazu auf viele bunte und informative Geschichten links und rechts des Schienenstranges gestoßen: ein Elefantencamp in der alten thailändischen Königsstadt Ayutthaya, ein Fest mit selbst gebastelten Raketen, Bauten der alten Kultur der Khmer oder ein Konzert mit der eigenständigen Musik des Isaan, dem trockenen Land des nordöstlichen Thailand. Als Kontrast zum Luxuszug Orient-Express reiste das Team auch mit einer lokalen Bahn und stellt eine kleine Haltestation vor, an der die ursprüngliche Eisenbahnromantik noch ganz lebendig ist. Vor allem durch diese Geschichten entsteht ein Porträt des Isaan und dessen Menschen, die in Thailands Politik eine immer größere Rolle spielen… – Quelle: Phoenix

Direktflüge zwischen Laos und Myanmar (E)

Vientiane, 24.03.2013 – Lao Airlines will begin direct flights to Myanmar in October after a two-decade absence of air links between Vientiane and Yangon.

Re-establishing an air link between the two capitals would open doors for investors and tourists, Saleum Tayarathm, Director of Lao Airlines’ Commercial Department, told the Vientiane Times.

“Our reason for opening the flight to Myanmar is not because we’re specifically targeting passengers from Lao PDR and Myanmar, but we’re looking at the demand from other countries like China, Republic of Korea and Japan,” Mr Saleum said.

The new air link is part of plans by Thailand, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Cambodia and Viet Nam to build better connections between the Mekong region neighbours.

Lao Airlines stopped flying to Yangon in the 1980s as the route was unprofitable.

But this time Lao Airlines is confident of a financial success as Myanmar has become a favourite destination for investors and tourists, Mr Saleum added. Lao Airlines plans to open a Vientiane-Phnom Penh route later this year, the official said.

Thailand, Viet Nam and Singapore are the only destinations in Southeast Asia currently served by Lao Airlines.

The Lao national flag carrier carried about 500,000 passengers in 2010 and jumped to about 900,000 customers last year. It expects to serve 1 million people this year.

Asien-Pazifik verzeichnet Besucherzuwächse

Bangkok, 15.03.2013 – Auch im vergangenen Jahr erwiesen sich die Länder und Gebiete des asiatisch-pazifischen Raums wieder als Magnete des internationalen Reiseverkehrs: Im Vergleich zum Vorjahr konnte die Region bei den Besucherzahlen noch einmal 5% zulegen, wie PATA, der Verband der Reiseverkehrsorganisationen für diese Zielgebiete, mitteilt. Nach vorläufigen Statistiken wurden insgesamt über 350 Millionen Besucher gezählt, ein Zuwachs von 18 Millionen gegenüber 2012. Damit verzeichnete man bereits im dritten Jahr in Folge einen Besucheranstieg.

Spitzenreiter beim Anstieg ihrer Besucherzahlen waren Myanmar, Japan, Kambodscha, Laos und Taiwan (ROC), die – aus unterschiedlichen Gründen – jeweils ein Plus von über 20 Prozent verzeichnen konnten. In absoluten Zahlen konnten sechs Reiseziele ein Plus von jeweils mehr als einer Million Besuchern melden: die SVZ Hongkong, Thailand, Japan, Singapur, die Republik Korea und Taiwan.

Mit einem Zuwachs von 9,9% führt die Unterregion Südostasien (Myanmar, Indonesien, Kambodscha, Laos, die Philippinen, Singapur, Thailand und Vietnam) das Feld an. Durch dieses Besucherplus von über acht Millionen stieg die Gesamtbesucherzahl aller ASEAN-Staaten (zu denen auch noch Brunei und Malaysia zählen) auf knapp 89 Millionen. Der größte Sprung gelang Myanmar, das mit einem Anstieg von knapp 52% erstmals die Millionenmarke durchbrach, gefolgt in deutlichem Abstand von Kambodscha (+24%) und Laos (+22%), die damit jeweils zum ersten Mal die Grenze von drei Millionen Besuchern überschritten.

Nach mehreren Jahren starker Besucheranstiege im zweistelligen Prozentbereich hat sich das Wachstum in Südasien (Bhutan, Indien, Malediven, Nepal, Pakistan und Sri Lanka) nun normalisiert, liegt aber noch immer bei eindrucksvollen 6,6%, was einem Plus von mehr als einer halben Million Besuchern entspricht. Den größten Anteil am Zuwachs steuert erwartungsgemäß der Flächenstaat Indien mit 6,6 Millionen Besuchern bei – 340,000 mehr als im Vorjahr. Sri Lanka überschritt mit einem Wachstum von nahezu 18% nun die Millionengrenze, die die Malediven 2012 noch knapp verfehlten.

Nach einem kaum nennenswerten Wachstum im Vorjahr meldeten sich die Südseestaaten und Ozeanien, die die Unterregion „Pazifik” bilden, mit einem Anstieg von 6 Prozent für die 18 hier zusammengefassten Einzelziele eindrucksvoll zurück, die damit insgesamt mehr als 20 Millionen Besucher (+1,1 Millionen) verzeichnen konnten. Prozentual konnten die Nördlichen Marianen mit 17.4% das höchste Wachstum einfahren, in absoluten Zahlen war es der US-Bundesstaat Hawaii.

Unter den großen der insgesamt 40 verschiedenen Reiseziele, die in der PATA-Statistik erfasst wurden, meldete lediglich die VR China einen Besucherrückgang. Rechnet man aus dieser Zahl jedoch den rückläufigen Anteil der Auslandschinesen heraus, die zu Besuch in die Heimat kamen, verzeichnete auch die VR China 2012 bei ausländischen Besuchern einen Zuwachs in Höhe von 1,6%. Die Unterregion Nordostasien insgesamt, zu der neben der VR China noch deren Sonderverwaltungszonen (SVZ), Japan, die Republik Korea, die Mongolei und Taiwan (ROC) zählen, kam in der Bilanz noch auf ein Plus von 4 Prozent, was 8,5 Millionen zusätzlichen Besuchern entspricht, von denen allein 6,7 Millionen (+16%) auf die SVZ Hongkong entfielen. Japan konnte die Verluste des Jahres 2011, in dem das Land von Erdbeben und Tsunami heimgesucht wurde, mit einem erneuten deutlichen Besucheranstieg (+35%) weiter wettmachen. Ein beeindruckendes Ergebnis erzielte auch Taiwan (ROC) mit einem Plus von 20%.

„Asien und die Pazifikregion werden unserer Einschätzung nach auf absehbare Zeit einen bedeutenden Beitrag zum weltweiten Wachstum des Fremdenverkehrs leisten,” mein Martin J. Craigs, der Vorsitzende der PATA. „Auch wenn es im Vergleich der Destinationen untereinander von Jahr zu Jahr Schwankungen gibt, erwarten wir insgesamt gesehen ein solides Wachstum, sowohl quantitativ als auch qualitativ.”

IHK-Ländertag: Wirtschaftliche Entwicklung von Laos

Hannover, 28.02.2013 – Laos ist für viele ein weitgehend unbekanntes Land, doch kommt es wie auch Myanmar oder Kambodscha zunehmend in den Blick des Interesses. Hintergrund ist die strategische Lage und die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung des Landes in den vergangenen Jahren. Geografisch liegt das Land zwischen dem wirtschaftlich aufstrebendem Thailand im Westen, den dicht besiedelten Küstenregionen Vietnams im Osten und dem sich industriell entwickelnden Südchina im Norden.

Die Weltbank schätzt das Wirtschaftswachstum von Laos für 2012 bei über 8 Prozent. Etwa die Hälfte dieser Wachstumsrate beruht auf dem Rohstoffsektor (vor allem Energieerzeugung sowie Kupfer- bzw. Gold-Abbau). Darüber hinaus besitzt das Land weitere Mineralien und ein riesiges noch unerschlossenes Potenzial an Wasserkraft. Mit rund 28.000 Mitarbeitern ist die Bekleidungsindustrie die größte Industrie des Landes. Erhebliche Wachstumsraten werden darüber hinaus im Tourismus, in der Transportbranche, im Einzelhandel, in der Bauwirtschaft und den ihr zuliefernden Industriebereichen erwartet.

Derzeit stammen die meisten ausländischen Direktinvestitionen in Laos aus China, Vietnam und Thailand. Die jüngsten Entwicklungen zeigen jedoch, dass das Land auch Potenziale für europäische Unternehmen bietet.

Themen beim „Ländersprechtag Laos“ am 18.März bei der IHK in Hannover sind die politische und wirtschaftliche Entwicklung des Landes sowie die Potentiale, die sich für deutsche Unternehmen eröffnen.

ASEAN wirbt mit neuer Internetpräsenz (E)

Vientiane, 04.02.2013 – A new website for the ASEAN under www.aseantourism.travel was officially introduced to the public during the ASEAN Travel Forum in Vientiane early this week. It might however create more confusion among professionals as two other websites fill exactly the same functions.

The website is still in development process. He provides for the time being 130 products in eight identified categories: Beach, Nature & Wildlife; Cruise, Tour & Rail; Culture & Heritage; Education & Volunteering; Food & Nightlife; Fun & Leisure; Health & Spa; Outdoor & Water Sports and Pilgrimage Tourism. The site has been revamped with beautiful pictures as well as a calendar of events, media releases and useful information such as statistics, official agreements and official publications. A next step will be the presentation of multi-country circuits. However, there is no possibility for now to buy packages online.

Although the site is useful by providing information ranking by countries or thematic, it is colluding with two other websites, creating further confusion. In 2010, ASEAN Association of Travel Agencies (ASEANTA) endorsed a project of a new website called Southeastasia.org, funded by USAid, the United States cooperation agency.

The grant helped to set up a new logo, emphasizing the geographical location of ASEAN rather than its political content. Southeast Asia is certainly more talkative for many travellers than the ASEAN entity. This site still exists offering also the possibility to book online. ASEANTA will probably have to come out with an explanation of running two almost similar websites.

More confusing is finally another website, this time private and called www.asean-tourism.com. Done from Thailand- as most of its information relate to this country, the website looks rather shabby and is this time not probably the best introduction to ASEAN. Source: traveldailynews

Erklärung der ASEAN-Tourismusminister (E)

Vientiane, 22.01.2013 – The Twelfth Meeting of the ASEAN Plus Three (China, Japan and the Republic of Korea)Tourism Ministers was held on 21 January in Vientiane, Lao PDR, in conjunction with the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2013 and the Sixteenth Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers (M-ATM).

The Meeting was preceded by the ASEAN Plus Three (APT) NTOs Meeting held on 19 January 2013 in Vientiane. The Meeting was jointly co-chaired by H.E. Prof. Dr. Bosengkham Vongdara, Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of Lao PDR, H.E. Mr. Wang Zhifa, Vice-Chairman of China National Tourism Administration, H.E. Mr. Yosuke Tsuruho, Senior Vice-Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Japan and H.E. Mr. Kwak Youngjin, 1st Vice-Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Rep. of Korea

2012 was a dynamic year for APT countries’ tourism. The growth of international visitor arrivals has been significant. Enhanced connectivity particularly air accessibility amongst APT countries has contributed to this positive growth of 11.9 compared to 2011. In 2012, APT countries received more than 98 million international visitor arrivals. Intra-APT countries remained as the main source markets with the share of 64.8 per cent compared to total international visitor arrivals in 2011.

The Ministers welcomed the outcomes of the 15th APT Summit and the respective ASEAN Plus One Summits held on 19 November 2012 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and supported the Mid-Term Review of the implementation of the APT Cooperation Work Plan (2007-2017).

In implementing the activities stipulated under the APT Work Plan, the Ministers adopted the APT Tourism Cooperation Work Plan 2013-2017 covering quality tourism, skills development, joint tourism marketing and promotion, cruise tourism, and tourism crisis communications. The adoption of the APT Tourism Cooperation Work Plan would further promote linkages and strengthen cooperation among National Tourism Organisations. The Ministers agreed to establish the APT Tourism Working Group to implement the Work Plan.

Noting the importance of APT tourism collaboration, the Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to deepen and broaden the collaboration. In this regard, the Ministers tasked their senior officials to expedite the finalisation of the Memorandum of Cooperation on APT Tourism Cooperation, which would be one of the key instruments to strengthen the good relationship and cooperation in tourism sector between ASEAN and Plus Three Countries.

The Ministers noted the successful completion of the year 2012 as “Visit ASEAN Plus Three Year”.

Noting the important role of accessibility amongst APT countries in sustaining tourism growth, the Ministers were pleased to note the progress of enhanced collaboration in the transport sector between ASEAN and China, Japan and ROK, particularly on initiatives of enhancing air connectivity between ASEAN and respective Plus Three Countries. The Ministers welcomed the conclusion of negotiations on Protocol 2 on the exchange of 5th freedom air traffic rights between ASEAN Member States and China under the ASEAN-China Air Transport Agreement that would create more air accessibility amongst cities in ASEAN and China. The Ministers appreciated Japan’s ongoing efforts for expansion of air connectivity with individual ASEAN countries. The Ministers looked forward to the early conclusion of the ASEAN-ROK Air Transport Agreement..

The Ministers acknowledged the important role of the ASEAN-Japan Centre, the ASEAN-Korea Centre and the ASEAN-China Centre in further promoting tourism exchanges between ASEAN and the Plus Three countries, and expressed their appreciation for their technical assistance provided in the area of tourism promotion, participation in major travel fairs and capacity building.

The ASEAN Tourism Ministers expressed appreciation to China for the support and assistance provided to ASEAN Member States through provision of complimentary booth at China International Travel Mart (CITM) 2012, tourism training, documentary shooting, and development of ASEAN tourism marketing website in Chinese language.

The ASEAN Tourism Ministers thanked Japan for assistance provided to ASEAN Member States particularly on the implementation of various ASEAN-Japan tourism projects/activities in 2012 for human resources development and promotion of travel to the ASEAN region through ASEAN-Japan Centre, including workshops on cruise tourism, training program for employees of tourism industry, and PR activities.
11. The ASEAN Tourism Ministers expressed their appreciation to ROK for its support to the development of ASEAN Tourism through several promotional activities and capacity building such as ASEAN Korean Language Training Course, ASEAN Tourism Guide Book and Mobile Application, etc. organized by ASEAN-Korean Centre and the 6th ROK-ASEAN Partnership Program organized by Korean Government inviting ASEAN tourism officials for enhancing their knowledge on Korean tourism policies.

The Meeting expressed sympathy and deepest condolences to the family of the late H.E. Chumpol Silapa-archa, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism and Sports of Thailand, and to the Government and people of Thailand for his passing away. It is a great loss not only to Thailand, but also to the ASEAN Plus Three Tourism Community for his significant contribution to the development of ASEAN Plus Three tourism cooperation.

The Ministers expressed their sincere appreciation to the Government and People of Lao PDR for the warm hospitality accorded to the delegations and the excellent arrangements made for the Meetings.
